St Abbs

St.Abbs Accommodation inc hotels, self catering holiday cottages and bed and breakfastsSt.Abbs is a small, picturesque village dramatically set on the coast, just north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. In addition to its superb location, the village also boasts a rich heritage. Originally called Coldingham Shore, fisherman who worked their boats from the beach had historically resided at Fisher’s Brae in Coldingham and had to carry their gear one and half miles down the Creel path to the Shore.

Rock house symbolises the site of the first building in St.Abbs; by the middle of the 18th century, a row of five houses followed, all constructed in a traditional Scottish style with a central fire and wide chimney.

By 1832, sixteen families were recorded in population records of
St.Abbs, with an additional twenty families residing in Coldingham. Fishing was the dominant source of income of these people, though today, with a declining population, many of the cottages in the St.Abbs area are second homes and seasonal tourism trade provides the greater revenue.

The village was renamed to St.Abbs at the end of the 19th century by the then Laird Mr Andrew Usher
