The Castle Jail, with a commanding view over the town was built as a reform jail in 1824 on the site of the original Jethart Castle which was demolished in 1409 to keep it out of the hands of the English. The jail now houses a museum of social history, re-opened in 1996 following major refurbishment of its displays. The displays in the cell blocks tell the story of this Howard Reform Prison, using costumed figures and period rooms. History of Jedburgh exhibitions with audio-visuals in the Jailers House.
