This 16th century roofless tower, built by James Seton of Touch, has an unusal and ingenious design quirk - a clockwise staircase which allowed retreating defenders to use their sword arm uninhindered, while attackers were obstructed by the curving wall. Erected in 1581, the ruined remains of Greenknowe Tower lie outside Gordon in the Scottish Borders. Occupied until the 1850's, it was finally passed in ownership to Historic Scotland in 1937 by the then owners, the Dalrymple Family.
