Property Description

Anwoth Old Schoolhouse has been carefully modernised providing spacious comfortable accommodation for two in a delightfully peaceful and quiet location on the edge of the hamlet of Anwoth and just a short way outside the popular town of Gatehouse of Fleet.   The cottage gardens are a special feature in that they are open by prior appointment under the Scotland's Garden Scheme so that all can enjoy the winding path along the burn which has been informally planted with perennial plants and shrubs whilst the garden itself has a wildlife pond and wild flower areas to explore together with a view point to the surrounding countryside.

The cottage itself has been converted from the Old Schoolhouse with the school room forming the living room/dining room which provides spacious accommodation whilst retaining the attractive features and the period characteristics.   The remainder of the cottage has been provided more recently to include for a large kitchen together with sun lounge seating area which can also be used for dining and looks out onto a small courtyard with fishpond.

The cottage is directly opposite the historic Anwoth Old Kirk yard which was featured in the well known film "TheWickerman".   The old gravestones within the yard are worth exploring and one to find and note is the Covenanters Martyr Stone commemorating all those who were hounded and shot for their religious beliefs during which was a bloody phase of Scotland's history.   Anwoth and Gatehouse of Fleet lie in the middle of the Fleet Valley which is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and well worth exploring either by car, on foot or by bike.   The beautiful and unspoilt countryside with superb woodlands and forestry walks are well worth taking time to discover as is the Solway Coast with its varied sandy beaches and rocky cliff and headland walks.   The bustling town of Gatehouse of Fleet with its good selection of shops, hotels and pubs is within walking distance either by road (1 1/2 miles) or by a country walk over Trusty's Hill with its Pictish stone carvings and superb views of the surrounding hills down to the coast and also Cardoness Castle.
