There is much to do in Stranraer and it's hinterland - outside when the weather is fine, and using the modern facilities of the town in inclement weather.
Stranraer is an important and busy town set on the banks of Loch Ryan, and Scotland’s main Northern Irish ferry port, crossing to Larne. Stranraer’s North West Castle is shaped like a ship and was home to the 18th century polar explorer Sir John Ross.
Take a walk around Stranraer and along the shore, visiting the museum and the Castle of St. John where the view from the roof is magnificent. Follow the Town Trail and discover for yourself.
Stranraer is a great centre for the serious walker and is skirted by the Southern Upland Way. For those who enjoy a garden walk, three famous gardens in the Stranraer area are open to the public - Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and Logan.
