The village of Ecclefechan is situated close to the M74 route from England to Scotland and is minutes from junction 19.

Apart from its name which holds an amusing ring for many visitors and its own brand of whisky and pastry - The famous Ecclefechan Tart , Ecclefechan is also the birthplace of the Thomas Carlyle.

As well as his historical works Carlyle wrote Chartism (1840) which opposes conventional economic theory. As a mathematician Carlyle is famed for his English translation of Legendre's éléments de géométrie. This translation ran to 33 editions.
